We sit amid August and at least seventeen Republican candidates vying for their party’s Presidential nomination. Inexplicably, all eyes and a great deal media attention is focused on a bombastic 69 year-old son of a New York real estate multi-millionaire. Or is it inexplicable..
Donald John Trump was born into wealth and privilege and leveraged that opportunity into a multi-billion dollar fortune through wit and a shameless ability to self promote his brand. Never lacking self confidence (at least on the public stage), he has now exploded into the 2016 Presidential carnival.
The public is accustomed to viewing his 'entertaining' shenanigans on various television shows where he spews insults and runs at three hundred miles-per-hour in three hundred directions. Why is a man that tip-toes the fine-line of jackass huckster and savant not laughed off the stage and into reality oblivion? Is it because the United States has become an all-encompassing reality show and The Donald is the master programmer?
I believe there is a grain of truth in that, but the bigger reason Donald Trump is finding an audience is the poisonous nature of what the American political dynamic has become and the steadily increasing view he (to this point in the campaign) is the anti-venom.
Americans (and perhaps the world) are sick and tired of career politicians. American leaders love to quote the Founding Fathers and pontificate on the original intent of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The simple reality is.. Jefferson, Hamilton, Madison et al would push the “REDO” button if they saw what their magnificent creation had become. Their concept of “public service” meant exactly that. A citizen enjoyed a career as a farmer, printer, apothecary, doctor, teacher, etc. and went to serve the country in the legislature or executive branch for a finite period of time, only to return to their profession and live out their life. Today, the country is 'managed' by professional politicians who have done nothing in their adult lives but run for office and fight like hell to retain that office and its trappings. No one has a straight answer for anything and they have no interest in solving important and expensive challenges. It is a system that is failing the country, and indeed the world.
The American public is sick of this failed fabrication. Enter Donald Trump. Donald Trump does not need the job. He does however love the attention that his un-filtered comments and observations garner. He is a mouthpiece for every American who is giving up on America. There is a large number of Americans who believe American is no longer a “can-do” nation and leader of the world. They believe the country is paralyzed by identity and gender politics as opposed to 'just get the damn job done!' Donald Trump is a hero to these people. Ask him a question; he has a direct un-filtered response. People know where he stands on the issues; and if you don’t, he’s happy to shriek louder.
Donald Trump is about promoting the Trump brand. He has the good fortune that promoting his brand ties in nicely with resurrecting the sagging American brand. Many Americans yearn to be a great nation and when Donald shouts that he’ll return the country to greatness and a place of leadership, they turn an ear and listen. It’s human nature. Don Trump is certainly no Vlad Putin, but the Russian people embrace Putin because he gives them hope through his actions that he will lead Russia back to global relevance.
There are many miles to travel before the nomination and election is decided but one thing is certain; Donald Trump has changed the dynamic and energy of the 2016 election profoundly. It’s a good thing.
